Choosing a provider that’s right for you

Before choosing a prepaid funeral plan, it can be a good idea to research what’s available. But, when there are lots of providers to choose from, where do you start?

With each provider offering different levels of cover, it can feel like a daunting task but once you’ve found one that suits your needs and budgets, it will be straightforward to put into place. What should you look for in a provider?  

What kind of service do I want?

Deciding what’s right for you and your loved ones is something to think about before you start looking into funeral plan providers. 

Without expressing your wishes, it can be difficult for families to make decisions at what will be an emotional time. Putting a funeral plan in place is the best way to make sure everything is taken care of when sadly the time comes. 

Before choosing a provider, it can be a good idea to speak to your top choices so that you can learn more about whether they offer burial, cremations, and/or direct cremations, what’s included and excluded from their plans and if it fits with what you want.

Is my money safe?

There’s been lots in the news lately about new regulations for funeral plan providers and how they invest their customers’ money. For reputable funeral providers protecting their customers’ funds is a priority. That’s why they have secure, independently managed trust funds set up. 

When speaking to providers ask them what they do with your money when you pay for your plan. 

When you choose One Life, the money that you pay is placed into our secure, independently managed One Life Trust Fund. This means that no matter what happens, your money is protected and there when the time comes. 

Our Trust Fund is separate and managed by one of the UK’s leading investment managers, Investec and is legally independent from One Life Funeral Planning. Doing things right is important to us, that’s why we make sure to comply with all the terms laid down by the Financial Services Markets Act 2000, the same way that all market-leading funeral plan trusts do.

Are the services I need covered?

The services covered in a funeral plan will differ between providers, with some only including a contribution towards costs or charging extra for the return of the ashes. 

It’s key to look at the breakdown of exactly what’s covered when you are considering which provider to go with.

Will I have to pay any hidden costs?

Just like lots of other things in life, you should always make sure you know exactly what you are paying for. When researching funeral plan providers ask them about what charges are involved, how you can pay for your plan and whether your family will have anything else to pay once you pass.

What happens if my details change?

For lots of us, we don’t all stay in the same place for the entirety of our life – it’s inevitable we’ll move house or even area at some point. 

When looking for a funeral plan provider, ask them if there are any charges if you need to change your details. 

If you do choose One Life as your provider, if you need to update your address or other details, we’ll never charge you. All we ask is that you let us know as soon as possible so that we can update your documents.

How can I pay?

There are two main ways you can pay for your funeral plan – it just depends on what’s right for you and your loved ones. That could be in a one off payment or over a set period of time with monthly instalments. 

Just remember to choose one with clear payment terms and a payment plan that will suit you.
